How to find international students

Can you find out where the students are living?  Do they have host families?  Who finds the host families for incoming international students?

Can you put up posters of an event for international students on campus (such as a trip to the Grand Canyon) or even something like a free dinner and conversation at your church?  Are there any international student clubs on campus that you could pass out flyers to?

Does the school promote Conversation Partners?  How does one sign up to be one?

Once you find a handful of students who like your events, then they will bring their friends.

Are there any Bible study clubs/groups, formal or informal on campus?  They may have notices posted around at the student center, library, etc.

Ask students you know on campus to help.  They may remember seeing international students and point you in the right direction.

Check with churches in the area who might have faculty or staff from the campus attending their church who would be willing to work with you.

Find out where the students hang out, coffee shops, etc. and go meet the students, introducing yourself.

Volunteering in the International Student Affairs office is a good way to find favor with the university as you serve them and it also provides a venue to build relationships with international students.

Sometimes just one student will be the key to getting information to other students (e.g. via a list serv) or can serve as the “door opener” for introductions/involvement with internationals.

Look at university websites for orientation events for international students. Stand outside the building/park where the event is being held and hand out flyers advertising your English class, picnic, or social event.

Also look at university websites to find the list of campus clubs. Email the president/leaders of the ethnic clubs (Korean, Japanese, Chinese, Indian, etc) and offer to take them out for a cup of coffee.  Then ask how your group can help their club.  They might send out your email ad to their whole list.

Handing out fliers on campus in August (when internationals arrive early and American students are few), face-to-face with a smile and word of explanation, is more effective. Need lots of good volunteers to do this.
