Following are testimonies from a married international student couple which exemplify the many facets of ISI’s ministry and how we see God utilizing this ministry to fulfill His plan for international students He has brought to America “for such a time as this.” By using ISI staff, friendship partners, volunteers, the Jesus video, International Christian Fellowships (ICFs), retreats, and many other forums supported by the prayers of many friends and partners of this ministry, the Lord orchestrated a miracle in the lives of this Chinese couple. When Tianyou came to the States in the summer of 1998 to work on his PhD in Geophysics at the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD), he did not have a very positive view of Christians or Christianity in general. A volunteer ISI couple befriended him and invited him to join them for their weekly ICF meetings. Tianyou reasoned the ICF could be a good place to learn English, so he began attending regularly. At one meeting, he was given an English copy of the Jesus video which he took home and forgot about. His wife, Yan Huang, joined him in the States at the end of 1998. Yan grew up in an environment in which people pursued knowledge constantly, believing that intelligence would change the society and improve the world. She was given a Bible by one of her Korean students in China, but did not study it seriously as she assumed that it was only a storybook. After arriving in the US, Yan was not enthusiastic about going to the ICF meetings. But because of the need to improve her English, she obliged to go with her husband. She found the people in the ICF very friendly. One of the volunteers helped Yan in dealing with daily life problems and another spent time helping her correct her accent. When she noticed that Christians were helping students without thought of receiving anything in return, she wondered what their motivation was? Telling herself that she wanted to be like the Christians who seemed always peaceful and warm, she started to read about Christianity. During the spring break of 1999, Yan went to an ICF retreat while Tianyou stayed home to finish some schoolwork. After a long period of studying, Tianyou decided to take a break and watch the Jesus video in order to relax and practice his English. Below, Tianyou shares in his own words how God orchestrated all the details to bring him to redemption: As I was watching the video, the life of Jesus became vivid in front of my eyes. As if I breathed the same air, I saw the people and events happening. I was touched by the movie, hanged on to the every words of the movie and was astonished by the amazing Jesus. At the end of the movie, there was a believer’s prayer, and I just repeated the very sentences of the short prayer. That is how I became a Christian. Praise God! At the retreat, Yan also had a wonderful experience. As she listened to the speaker talk about the purpose of life and the love of God, she was captivated by his words and repeated the believer’s prayer. Because of her experience of Christ’s love through others and a clear presentation of the Gospel, Yan believed the Truth and accepted Christ as the Lord and Savior of her life. When Tianyou and Yan came together and reviewed that weekend’s events, they discovered that God had led them both to Himself at almost at the exact same time! As you can see, this couple’s lives were drastically changed by the love of Christ through the ministry of ISI. Who knows how many other international students have similar testimonies. Who knows how many other lives will be transformed for God’s glory as a result of these influential international students coming to Christ. Praise God for what He did through His servants.
