Re: Reaching out to Japan

The crisis in Japan continues to unfold in the wake of Friday's devastating earthquake and tsunami. I know I'm not alone in expressing deep sympathy to the people of Japan. Many in our community at UC Santa Cruz have family and loved ones in Japan, and they are in my thoughts, as well.

I am relieved to report that the five UCSC students who were in Japan as part of the UC Education Abroad Program have been located, and all are safe.

As we grapple with the magnitude and scope of the challenges facing Japan, I am appreciative of the efforts that people affiliated with our campus have made to our collective understanding of this crisis. Lecturer Dan Hirsch and alumnus Stephen Schwartz have provided news analysis of the risks posed by Japan's damaged nuclear-power facilities. Research geophysicist and tsunami expert Steven Ward has also provided very helpful assistance to reporters.

UCSC is a generous community in other important ways. Many aid organizations are reaching out to the people of Japan, and I encourage you to support relief efforts as you are able. Below are the names of just a few of the organizations that are accepting donations for earthquake and tsunami relief.

• American Red Cross, 800-RED-CROSS

• CARE, 800-521-CARE

• U.S. Fund for UNICEF, 800-FOR-KIDS

Again, please join me in extending sincere sympathy to all those who have been touched by this disaster.
