Weather at beach: cold & windy, just like in photo above. :-( Puerto Rico was nice though, I experienced afresh being a cultural outsider, and the importance of locals reaching out a little. My new best friend in Puerto Rico, Emma, saw I was a bit lost and invited me to join in, introducing me to the camp leaders--it was my best experience on the trip, to make real friendships with locals! Thanks Emma! This fall we offer our usual activities, Welcome Picnic Oct. 12-- but are also lining up a great guest speaker, Dr. Promod Haque, a top venture capitalist in Palo Alto, and ISI alumni. Our ISI Bay Area staff are planning a Bay Area event with Dr. Haque, originally in the fall, but we're postponing till springtime. ISI international staff conference was at Niagara Falls in June, awesome to be at the bottom of the falls, to FEEL the overwhelming rush of water over the cliffs. Like God's love that He wants to FILL our lives with! As I reconnect with current ISI students, its fun to hear what they're doing this summer: internships in Boston, Silicon valley, and even stuck here at UCSC labs, and even one is at the Beijing Olympics. I'm sad I didn't go too, but cheering for the great job some of my old friends are doing putting it on!! A beautiful event to bring the world together in positive competition--like no other event in the world. I hope we can do a little of that in ISI, how about a silly-Olympics contest for our Welcome Picnic. Choose whatever kind of event you think you can win and we'll try it. (math problems, creative writing, folkdance, etc.) Send me your ideas! Hope to see you all Oct. 12 @ the Welcome Picnic Cheers-- Peggy Sept 27, 2007-- Hi new Banana Slugs!
